Communication

What do you expect to learn from this pod-casting project?
  • Being able to speak in Japanese more fluidly and with a stronger sense of coherency so that others (who will be watching our podcast) will be able to understand us.
  • Learn how to work in a team more effectively - being able to accomplish individual goals while working within a group setting towards a common purpose.
  • Time management - it is a considerably large and comprehensive project, so it makes sense that each team will have to work within a budgeted set of time (and learn how to improvise if necessary).
  • Learning how to carefully craft and convey a message to a general audience.
What does communication mean to you?
In literal terms, communication is the exchanging of thoughts and ideas. However, that definition does not take into consideration a lot of factors such as time, individualism, efficiency - it is a concept that is much more complicated in its application. To me, communication in a group setting means being able to balance both the needs and goals of the individual with the needs and goals of the entire group. If you work steadily towards a purpose while taking into consideration what means will be both effective and efficient in order to reach this goal, everything will work out. Communication is both being able to learn from others and being able to learn from one's self.

  2. You raised a good point that communication is a construction process to develop fruitful dialogue with both yourself and others. Considering how different mediums (text, image, audio, video) will affect the process may help you get better idea of how to conduct effective team work both online and offline.

  3. I completely agree with you when you say that there are factors that must be taken into consideration when bringing up the topic of communication. I too feel that there is a much deeper level than just the face value of transmitting ideas. Communication involves so much more and it is able to achieve a much greater breadth of things than just getting my idea across to another person. To say that communication is just the exchange of ideas seems to deprive it of what I'd call its beauty.

  4. Your definition of communication certainly goes beyond the literal meaning of the word. I would have never thought of communication in the way you describe it, a dialogue between oneself and others. I also agree that communication does not merely involve being able to speak Japanese correctly, but also being able to "carefully craft and convey a message to a general audience".

  5. I like your definition of communication. I agree, communication is a delicate balance of saying what you want to say, and hearing what other people have to say, and meeting in the middle to achieve a common goal. I also completely agree that its more complicated in application than in definition and takes a lot of effort. I hope the podcast was a positive experience!
